Charles Freitag is the Norman Rockwell of American farm life.
Two major influences in his artwork are growing up in rural Iowa on a farm and his love of Norman Rockwell. Rockwell’s influence can be seen in many of his pieces, like Haying Days and Autumn Memories. Chuck pays a lot of attention to the “mood” of his paintings. You can smell the hay, feel the crisp fall air, hear the deep chug-chug of the tractor engines. You can hear the light hearted banter between the ‘mechanics’ and kids in Old Time Service. The sunlight of his Iowa childhood plays in all his artwork. It works so well because he is at home in his artwork.
The quote from Chuck that describes his intent best is,“In each of my paintings, I try to convey my fond childhood memories of life on the family farm”.
He backed up his early experiences of farm life and love of art with a degree from The Academy of Art in Chicago. He has never strayed far from his roots and still lives in Iowa where he is resides in Marion, is happily married and is painting like a crazy man to support his family of six!!
